The Solomon Islands National University (SINU) will soon establish its fourth campus in Malaita Province. The relevant authorities signed an agreement to make this happen during the Malaita Day anniversary in Auki last week.

In his speech, SINU Vice-Chancellor Professor Transform Aqorau expressed his satisfaction with this development, stating:

“Today is a day of immense significance, a turning point in our history. As we gather here to sign the Agreement for establishing the 4th Solomon Islands National University Campus in Malaita, we are not merely signing a document—we are laying the cornerstone of a dream long held by the people of this great province. Malaita, rich in culture, tradition, and resilience, has always been a beacon of strength within our nation.

Today, we take a monumental step towards ensuring that the youth of Malaita and other parts of the Solomon Islands have access to the same opportunities as their peers in Honiara and overseas.

Establishing this university campus is more than a physical expansion; it symbolizes our commitment to equality, development, and progress. It acknowledges Malaita’s crucial role in our nation’s history and its vital place in our future. This campus will serve as a bridge between the past and the future, creating a vibrant community of learning, growth, and empowerment.”

As the agreement was signed, Professor Aqorau reflected on its significance, emphasizing that it represents not just the establishment of a campus but the planting of seeds of hope, opportunity, and transformation. He underscored the commitment to ensuring that education is the key to unlocking the nation’s full potential and making it accessible to all.

The new campus is expected to significantly impact Malaita’s economy. The construction phase will create numerous jobs, providing livelihoods for local families. Once completed, the campus will offer long-term employment opportunities for educators, administrators, and support staff, extending the economic benefits well into the future.

The presence of a thriving university campus is anticipated to attract businesses and investors, contributing to regional development. The influx of students, faculty, and visitors is expected to increase demand for local businesses, further stimulating the local economy.

Beyond the economic benefits, the campus’s social impact will be profound. For years, the youth of Malaita have faced barriers to accessing higher education, often having to leave their homes to pursue further studies. This campus will significantly reduce these barriers, bringing education within reach for many young people in the province.

Professor Aqorau highlighted that the campus would be more than just an educational institution; it would be a hub of innovation and a cradle of culture. It will provide students with the skills and knowledge needed to navigate the modern world, serving as a crucible for the future leaders of Malaita and the Solomon Islands.
The Vice Chancellor encouraged the Malaitan community to view the university as an extension of their own, emphasizing the importance of local involvement in the campus’s success. He also called upon donors, development partners, and other stakeholders to support the project, envisioning a campus that is a centre of educational excellence and a model of environmentally responsible development.

Professor Aqorau emphasized that establishing the 4th SINU Campus in Malaita is more than just a construction project; it is a bold investment in the future of the province and the nation.

He invited all stakeholders to join in this endeavour, stressing that together, they could build something extraordinary that would leave a lasting legacy for future generations.
