Protecting Highland Soil Through Contour Farming
Lionel Maeliu, founder of Gwaunafiu Farmers School in Malaita, is calling on highland farmers to adopt contour farming methods to protect their soil from erosion.
Speaking to Malaita News, he highlighted the urgent need to safeguard topsoil, which is essential for growing healthy crops.
“Topsoil is the only layer that feeds crops and ensures food for our people. We must protect it from being washed away by rain and wind,” Maeliu explained.
He advised farmers to move away from slash-and-burn practices, which destroy important microorganisms that help soil fertility. Instead, he encouraged using organic materials like dead leaves and rotting wood to rebuild and enrich the topsoil.
“As the founder of Gwaunafiu Farmers School, I’m happy to share this knowledge,” he said.
“Very soon, we will offer training at the center, with a focus on contour farming methods for highland areas.”
Contour farming, which involves planting along natural land contours, is a proven method to reduce soil erosion, conserve water, and improve crop yields. Maeliu’s efforts aim to equip highland farmers with sustainable practices that ensure long-term food security for their communities.
